Why so few offers?
The Swiss pet insurance market has been built around dogs and cats (see our comparison). Exotic pets remain a niche market for insurers: highly diverse species, very variable lifespans, specialised medicine. In France, some insurers cover rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas and parrots — but these contracts are aimed at residents of France and are not offered in Switzerland.
Epona's bird insurance: who is it for?
Epona offers insurance for birds and birds of prey that pays out the animal's value in the event of death. For a high-value parrot or a bird of prey, it may be worthwhile — but it will not reimburse your veterinary bills. Don't confuse the two.
The right strategy without insurance
- Set aside the equivalent of a premium each month (20 to 40 CHF) in a dedicated account: after a few years, most treatments are covered
- Prevention first: appropriate husbandry avoids the majority of consultations — see our fact sheets by species
- Ask for a quote before any major treatment: it's normal and the vet understands
- If times get tough, talk openly about budget with the vet: payment by instalments, alternative treatments
And don't forget your private liability insurance : it's what covers the damage your pet could cause to third parties.
